Know Your Rights Peer Education Initiative

FDLA’s Know Your Rights MultiMedia Peer Education Campaigns conduct street outreach, workshops, leadership development and produce multimedia educational materials to build the hope, skills, and knowledge necessary for people to access their constitutional rights when in contact with police.

In 2013, only 0.2% of arrestees had a lawyer available to consult with at the police station; by 2018 this number was up to nearly 2.0%.

The campaign’s focus in Englewood, Oakland, Bronzeville, North Lawndale, Austin, Roseland, South Shore, Kenwood, South Chicago, Grand Crossing, Auburn Gresham, West Englewood, Homan Square, Woodlawn, Washington Park, and Garfield Park aims to continue increasing arrestees’ access to station house counsel in 2019.

To this end, FDLA trains and supports youth, parents, law students, attorneys and partner organizations in each of these communities to in turn train their constituents.

To volunteer, attend a workshop to observe and introduce yourself to the organizers. We will train and support you to deliver workshops!
